Lisa Alvarado Joins the ACT Team
Lisa Alvarado isn't your average young woman- she is a mover and a shaker! Lisa has been empowered to make change since the age of 16 when she first joined the Female Leadership Academy (FLA) in 2006. During FLA she was known as the "condom girl" on her high school campus because she distributed condoms to sexually active teens. Lisa was instrumental in collecting data from the students for our comprehensive sex education campaign and became an expert speaker on behalf of getting VUSD to stop implementing abstinence only curriculum. After two years in the FLA, Lisa just couldn't get enough. She worked her heart out on defeating Proposition 4 (parental notification for abortion) in 2008. She phone banked, walked precincts and protested endlessly on both Proposition 4 and Proposition 8 (same sex marriage).
During the past 3 years, Lisa has spent her time working for Planned Parenthood Mar Monte and attending school part time. She worked both in the clinic setting and also in the call center. She remained active on the ACT Board and was Board Chair in 2011. Lisa is now ACT's Youth and Alumni Program Intern. Lisa shared this statement about her new role, "This position within ACT will allow me to give back to the community what ACT has given to me. I envision that this new position will allow me to engage and mobilize FLA Alumni and community members to take the organization to a whole new level."
It is with great pleasure that we introduce Lisa to you (if you do not already know her!) We welcome her in her new role with the organization and know you will enjoy working with her on her projects.
