Comprehensive Sex Education Campaign
History of ACT for Women and Girls (ACT) working on Sex Education within Visalia Unified School District (VUSD)- Female Leadership Academy (FLA) students presented to the Visalia Unified School district about SB71 in 2006 after conducting survey research. The Class of 2006 received focused training on SB71 and utilized the ACLU of Northern California for expert advice. In 2007, The SB 71 group was successful in conducting over 150 surveys at Visalia High Schools (primarily El Diamante). The group presented to the Golden West School Site Council to stress the need for more Comprehensive Sex Education in the classroom and to propose the idea of creating a special assembly to educate and reiterate Sex Education to help prevent teen pregnancy, raise awareness about STI’s and teach about healthy relationships. The group also met with Juan Guerro from the Visalia Unified School District Board to talk about actions taken in Visalia Unified to monitor SB 71. In 2009, a new campaign strategy was launched.
The NEW Campaign- SUCCESS and more work! CLRJ and ACT implemented a campaign to guarantee justice for all 15,000 VUSD students and many more for years to come! The Female Leadership presented to the School Board and they listened! They implemented each of their recommendations from updating the curriculum, training teachers, creating a testing policy for students to ensure they received the information, provide additional information about comprehensive sex education in afterschool programs, and uphold education code. ACT is working to ensure a resolution is passed within the district to make sure all students for years to come receive comprehensive, non-biased, medically accurate sex education.
