Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Issues

These days there are many different views and opinions on homosexuality in the central valley compared to California as a whole. As a graduating high school senior, I feel as though my sexual orientation plays a major role in my life. Being a lesbian in the central valley, I feel as though there is a lack of awareness regarding the acceptance of the individuals in my community. The California Supreme Court ruling to lift the ban on same-sex marriage is a huge first step in creating a better future for gays and lesbians. I do believe that if we can embrace this Supreme Court decision, we can pave the way to end discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) citizens across the nation.

Due to the Supreme Court ruling, many diverse groups of people are more aware of the LGBT issues I am most passionate about. The advantages that come from the passing of this law will benefit towards same-sex couples looking for the same equality of heterosexual married couples. Although, societal attitudes towards same-sex marriage will have to change in order for complete equality to happen. Setbacks from individuals such as Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern was quoted saying that she feels "the homosexual agenda is destroying the nation" and also that homosexuality poses a bigger threat to the U.S than terrorism. There is no relevance between terrorism and homosexuality, and to compare the two is insulting. Because we face the homophobic attitudes of individuals such as Sally Kern and many central valley residents, same-sex marriage will continue to face hurdles in California regarding acceptance.

There might be different views on this issue, but there is only one correct answer, being gay is NOT a sin. I do not choose to be gay, I was born that way, and I feel by people not accepting me for how I was born, is discriminatory. I truly hope that people change their views in this world and learn to be more accepting, me being gay does not affect them in any way shape or form. Love is love. So let’s celebrate the newest laws of approving same-sex marriage in California and begin opening our minds to more possibilities for gay and lesbian couples.
